As with most professions there are good and bad in every sector and whenever you are looking to engage with any company to provide services, if you’re looking to chose a business coach it’s well worth knowing what questions to ask so you can tell the expert from the idiot.

  1. What business have you built up?
  2. What support do you use?
  3. Do you use a formal programme to help your clients or do you come up with it as you go along?
  4. Are you a specialist in your field?
  5. What additional courses, classes and workshops have you found useful and what are you currently doing?
  6. Are you a member of a professional organisation?
  7. Do You have any awards
  8. How do you think you can help me?

 1. What business have you built up and sold, or built up so that it pays you every single month whether or no you work in it?

A business consultant should walk there talk, the definition of a business is a commercial profitable organisation that you can walk away from and it will pay you every single month, and you’ve either built one of these up and sold it or your building one now, the main thing is that they have an exit plan.

2. What external support do you use?

Everyone performs better with external support and someone to hold them accountable, again this is about walking your talk and using a coach yourself, the ROI is always worth it and things just happen faster, plus you’re always learning from these coaching sessions so those learnings get past onto their clients.

3. Do you use a formal programme to help your clients or do you come up with it as you go along?

Some sort of programme is always best as it gives you tracks to run on and makes sure that you don’t miss anything

4. Are you a specialist in your field?

Anyone claiming to be a specialist in business consulting could potentially be more of a liability, always make sure they’ve got a broad range of experience, you can niche and have a preferred sector, but generally all businesses are unique but they all have common problems and a lot of times what one sector is using successfully can be transferred to another sector.

Great Question for When you Choose a Business Coach

5. What additional courses, classes and workshops have you found useful and what are you currently doing?

What you want to hear is that there is some sort of continuous learning process, so you want them to be getting new qualifications, attending workshops on a variety of subjects regularly so they can help their clients better, plus always reading or listen to something, what you’re looking for is someone with a real thirst for learning

6. Are you a member of a professional organisation?

Professional organisations always have some sort of criteria or things that that members must have done to become members, so any business coach or consultants should have a minimum of one membership to a professional body.

7. Do you have any awards?

Awards are a good way of seeing how a business is perceived by its industry peers, also it demonstrates that they are proactive within their sector

8. How do you think you can help me?

This isn’t the sort of answer that can be given after 20 minutes, a reasonable idea of what can be potentially done can only be given after a initial consultation and even then I only really start to get a feel for what can be done after two full on questioning sessions, I always say my biggest competitor is the guy down the bar, who after a short conversation tells you what you should be doing, how can anyone understand your business that quickly and give you the best advice
